DESCRIPTION:From April 24 to 27\, 2025\, in Costacciaro\, Italy\, the italian Federazione Umbra Gruppi Speleologici (FUGS)\, in collaboration with Ipogenica APS\, is organizing the Cave Photography Workshop led by Robbie Shone. \nThe number of participants is limited \nThis workshop is a unique event\, not only because it offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from a world-renowned master\, but also because Robbie Shone does not usually conduct photography workshops. This exclusive experience will allow participants to discover the secrets and techniques of a true pioneer who has dedicated his life to documenting the underground world. \n“An explorer of caves and a visual storyteller\, Shone is recognized as one of the most accomplished cave photographers in the world. Over the past 25 years\, he has illuminated and captured extraordinary images of the dark hypogean world\, with expeditions taking him to some of the most remote parts of the planet\, where he has documented the deepest\, largest\, and longest cave systems ever known. DESCRIPTION:The 5th Middle East Speleology Symposium will soon reunite us again. This time we will meet in the great country of Sultanate of Oman in the prestigious Sultan Qabous University (SQU). Those cavers and scientists with a passion to caves and karst and interest or curiosity of the Middle East will find their peers at the MESS5 on the 22nd\, 23rd and 24th of October 2024. We look forward to meet old friends and getting to know new friends during this reunion. The MESS5 Scientific Programme will follow on the previously defined themes and topics\, keeping coherence with the Middle East Speleology Symposia. It will cover the three major thematic domains (Technical Speleology\, Scientific Speleology\, and Karst Management & Protection). SUMMARY:29th International Cave Bear Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Dear Cave Bear Friends\, \nin 2024 we will meet at the SPELEON\, Centre of subterranean heritage in Rakovica\, Croatia. \nBarac Caves were among the first caves in Croatia open for visitors back in 1892. The data gathered by the first explorers (prof. Mijo Kišpatić) before opening\, suggested that caves had also been visited by many Ice Age animals\, coming here to hibernate\, grow offsprings\, or simply to peacefully eat prey. Today we know that the Barać Caves hide a large number of Pleistocene fauna fossiled bones\, as well as at least 48\,000-year-old traces of modern humans\, and Neanderthals. The first scientific research is launched in 2013 when valuable archaeological and paleontological findings have been discovered. A year before\, the project called Plitvice Valleys (Plitvičke doline) had kicked off\, with a part of it exploring the Barać Caves and its heritage. \nThe idea was to establish a small museum named The House of Caves. However\, later research resulted in much greater archaeological and paleontological findings\, so the initial idea became „too tight“. That is how the idea of the Speleon Centre came to life. \nOn Friday 27th September will be the day for presentation. DESCRIPTION:Hidden Earth is the name for the British Cave Research Association’s (BCRA’s) annual caving conference. \nThis weekend-long event taking place in September every year is a friendly\, educational\, inspiring and social gathering of hundreds of cavers from across the UK and overseas. \nThe weekend is packed with lectures\, with two or three parallel sessions running both days. DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled! \nOn behalf of the European Cave Protection Commission and the Institute of Geography\, Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University Pavol Jozef Šafárik we kindly invite all speleologists\, scientists and authorities active in monitoring and management of cave-\, karst- and groundwater\, to participate at the 7th EuroSpeleo Protection Symposium organized jointly by the University Pavol Jozef Šafárik (UPJŠ) in Košice (SK) and the European Cave Protection Commission (ECPC) of the European Speleological Federation (FSE). The symposium will be held from 9th to 13th September 2024 at the teaching-training facility of the University of Pavol Jozef Šafárik in Danišovce\,district of Spišská Nová Ves\, Slovakia. \nCaves and Karst are important features of the European landscape and have intrinsic natural beauty and value. However\, they are constantly exposed to numerous human impacts\, directly inside the cave environment or indirectly in the associated surrounding. Karst regions suffer from destruction\, air and water pollution associated mainly due to forestry\, agricultural chemicals\, quarries\, landfills\, mining\, urban and rural development and uncontrolled mass tourism. Karst and caves offer a direct access to the groundwater aquifer and the risk of pollution from threads is very high. \nThe 2024 EuroSpeleo Protection Symposium’s theme of “WATER in Caves and Karst” Understanding – Vulnerability – Protection will focus on scientific and technical aspects of water in caves and karst. Although several explorations have been done and discover many breathtaking features\, most of the part is still remain unknown. It is filled with soaring karst-tower\, crystal-clear spring\, and gigantic caves\, making this region incomparable with others. \nSangkulirang-Mangkalihat karst is divided into several blocks each contains its own chalenges. Further and deeper explorations are still needed to add more values to this area. Uniquenesses of this area can be seen from its geological\, speleological\, and even archaeological phenomenon. This is home of the many rock art caves\, revealing how our ancestors lived and culture. Through all of those features\, it is very urgent to establish the status as Geopark or World Heritage in order to preserve the richness of this area. \nThis expedition is initiated by Karst Research Group of Universitas Gadjah Mada and one of the parts of Road to International Karst and Cave Year 2021 under patronage of Asian Union of Speleology and Federation of Indonesian Sepelological Activities. SUMMARY:31st International Karstological School "Classical karst"
DESCRIPTION:DATA ACQUISITION AND ANALYSIS IN KARST SYSTEMS \nWe have been organizing the International Karst School “Classical Karst” (IKS) since 1993. The school offers a framework in which both\, young and established karstologists from all over the world present new research in the field of karstology\, socialize and get to know Classical karst. Every year\, we choose a leading topic\, the history and state of research of which are presented by invited lecturers\, while the other participants present their research in the form of lectures or posters. The red thread of the school are the afternoon and full-day excursions\, where the leading theme is presented in the field sites of the Classical Karst. The last full-day excursion is entirely dedicated to the general presentation of the most important areas of the Classic Karst. \nThe 31st IKS from 17th – 21st June 2024 will delve into the pivotal theme of data: its acquisition\, processing and interpretation. The rapid evolution of measurement and analytical techniques in the engineering and natural sciences has significantly augmented the toolkit of methods and findings in karst research. State-of-the-art measuring systems\, which provide data with high spatial and temporal resolution\, now permeate all facets of karst research — from speleology\, karst hydrology\, geology and geomorphology to research into the cave climate and subterranean life. When navigating the challenging terrain of the karst underground\, one encounters many obstacles that require innovative solutions for data acquisition. The complexity of karst environments requires ingenuity in processing and interpreting the temporal and spatial data obtained. We also plan to assist countries where more help is needed to make them more effective as first responders to cave accidents. Cerovacke Caves are the largest tourist cave complex in Croatia and are located on the hillside of southern Velebit\, on the northeastern slope of the Crnopac hill \, in the protected area of ​​the Velebit Nature Park. The nearest town is Gračac\, 4 km away. \nSince its inception in 2007\, the Balkan Speleological Union has been proudly hosting this annual event in different countries across the Balkan Peninsula. DESCRIPTION:BCRA Cave Science Symposium 2023 hosted jointly with the Leeds Geological Association\n \nSymposium – Saturday 21st October\, 2023\nField-trip – Sunday 22nd October\, 2023\nSchool of Earth and Environment\, University of Leeds\n \nThe Symposium will be hosted by Prof. Simon Bottrell and Dr. Phil Murphy at the School of Earth and Environment\, University of Leeds\, on Saturday 21st October\, 2023. The programme of oral and poster presentations will be of interest to anyone wishing to learn more about cave and karst research and the underground environment. All are welcome and we particularly invite Undergraduate\, Masters and PhD students to participate. This will be a live event\, but will also be streamed on Zoom.\n \nPlease arrive from 9am for a 9.45pm start. Sessions will finish at 5pm.
