SUMMARY:32nd International Karstological School - Extreme conditions and events in Karst
DESCRIPTION:Extreme conditions and events in Karst \nClimate changes and the unrestricted growth of population result in increasing frequency and intensity of extreme hydrological and climatic events in karst regions\, posing significant threats to both people and the environment. The 32nd International Karstological School will focus on monitoring these extreme events and understanding their underlying mechanisms\, while exploring strategies for early warning\, prevention\, and mitigation of their impacts. The program will examine how surface changes influence the karst subsurface and provide a platform to share experiences\, challenges\, and solutions in monitoring such events. Additionally\, attention will be given to extreme events in geological past\, with insights drawn from cave sediments and other cave or surface formations. Finally\, discussions will address policies and measures aimed at reducing the impact of extreme events on karst environments and the communities that depend on them. Participants are encouraged to contribute by sharing their experiences\, the challenges they have faced and the insights they have gained. \nWelcome to participate! \nWe have been organizing the International Karst School “Classical Karst” (IKS) since 1993. The school offers a framework in which both\, young and established karstologists from all over the world present new research in the field of karstology\, socialize and get to know Classical karst. Every year\, we choose a leading topic\, the history and state of research of which are presented by invited lecturers\, while the other participants present their research in the form of lectures or posters. The red thread of the school are the afternoon and full-day excursions\, where the leading theme is presented in the field sites of the Classical Karst. DESCRIPTION:The Caving Group of the DAV Section Erlangen (https://www.alpenverein-erlangen.de/gruppen/hoehlengruppe/) organises the Annual Conference  from June 19th to June 22nd 2025 with the theme: Art and Children. The conference will be held in the town of Waischenfeld near Bayreuth\, Bavaria\, Germany. There are parking lots\, space for mobile homes and a campsite within walking distance \nCave art \nThe conference will feature an exhibition of works of art related to caves by the painter Lucja Radwan from Vienna. Other artists are welcome to exhibit their works of art\, e.g. paintings and sculptures. \nDuring the conference\, interested parties will have the opportunity to hear explanations about the works of art from the artists. Some of the works of art can also be purchased. \nChildren and youth development \nThe Nuremberg Children’s Museum is supporting us here. This is a foundation with the aim of imparting knowledge on specialist topics to children and young people. The children’s museum will be present during the conference and will demonstrate in a special room what opportunities there are to impart knowledge in the field of speleology. This is not a traditional museum. Here\, children can touch and try out everything. Children can carry out most of the experiments themselves. Following the success of the 2024 event\, we’re returning to Lllangollen in Wales again on the last weekend of September so save the date! \nHidden Earth is the name for the British Cave Research Association’s (BCRA’s) annual caving conference. \nThis weekend-long event taking place in September every year is a friendly\, educational\, inspiring and social gathering of hundreds of cavers from across the UK and overseas. \nThe weekend is packed with lectures\, with two or three parallel sessions running both days. SUMMARY:BCRA Cave Science Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The British Cave Research Association are pleased to announce details of the 36th Annual Cave Science Symposium and associated field trips. The symposium will be hosted by Professor David Richards\, Linda Wilson and Professor Fiona Whitaker at the University of Bristol’s School of Geographical Sciences\, University Road Bristol on Saturday 11th October 2025. The programme of oral and poster presentations will be of interest to anyone wishing to learn more about cave and karst research and the underground environment. \nSymposium – Saturday 11th October 2025\nField trips will take place on Sunday 12th October in the wider Bristol area\, including the nearby Mendips such as GB Cave\, Pen Park Hole and Fishmonger’s Swallet. \nWe welcome everyone with an interest in caves and cave science. This will be a live in-person event but will also be streamed online\, where possible. The BCRA AGM will be held in person and online at the end of the morning session. Following the symposium\, an informal evening meal will be arranged for those who are interested. Further details will follow. Field trips will take place on Sunday 12th October in the wider Bristol area\, including the nearby Mendips. \nCall for Abstracts\nThis year’s scientific themes will include climate\, faunal and archaeological records from caves in addition to karst hydrogeology and geomorphology. \nOral and poster presentations are invited on all areas of cave and karst science\, including:\n• past climate records from caves\n• speleogenesis\,\n• karst hydrogeology\,\n• cave archaeology/palaeontology\n• cave biology\n• cave technology. \nThose wishing to present at the Symposium should provide a title and an abstract of up to 300 words and indicate whether an oral presentation or poster presentation would be preferred. This should be sent to David Richards (david.richards@bristol.ac.uk) by 15th August 2025. Please include “BCRA” in the subject line of your email. \nRegistration \nEntry is free of charge\, but donations would be appreciated (£5 for students\,  £10 for non-students) to help cover the cost of the event. SUMMARY:11th International Workshop on Ice Caves IWIC
DESCRIPTION:IWICs are a series of workshops dedicated to the study of ice caves\, held biannually since 2004. The first workshop was organized in Căpuș (Romania)\, in 2004\, and subsequent ones were held in Demanovská Dolina (Slovakia\, 2006)\, Perm (Russia\, 2008)\, Obertraun (Austria\, 2010)\, Grigna-Milan (Italy\, 2012)\, Idaho Falls (USA\, 2014)\, Postojna (Slovenia\, 2016)\, Picos de Europa (Spain\, 2018)\, Liptovský Mikuláš (Slovakia\, 2022) and Werfenweng (Austria\, 2024). \nThe main aim of the workshops is to offer a venue for sharing discoveries\, questions and ideas related to the past and present occurrence of (perennial) ice in caves. DESCRIPTION:International underground biology meets in Mangalia for the 27th ICSB \nFrom September 7 to 12\, 2026\, Mangalia will become a global hub for research on subterranean ecosystems. The Romanian city\, located on the southern coast of Dobrogea\, overlooking the Black Sea\, will host the 27th International Conference on Subterranean Biology (ICSB 2026). \nThe conference annually brings together researchers\, biologists\, and speleologists from around the world. The goal is to share the latest research on underground biology and foster scientific exchange between diverse research communities. \nThe choice of Mangalia is no coincidence. 2026 marks the 40th anniversary of the discovery of the Movile Cave. The cave is located just 3 kilometers from the conference center. \nMovile Cave: the underground chemosynthesis ecosystem with a record number of endemic species. \nMovile Cave is one of the most studied subterranean ecosystems in the global scientific community. Discovered in 1986\, it remained isolated from the surface for over 5 million years. It was the first subterranean ecosystem to be recognized as entirely based on chemosynthesis. \nMovile Cave is home to 37 endemic species\, the highest number ever recorded in a similar underground ecosystem. Access is permitted exclusively for scientific research purposes. This restriction has preserved the environment’s biodiversity intact over the decades. Underground biology finds one of its most important global subjects of study here. \nThe Dobrogea Karst Landscape: Geodiversity and Underground Environments in the Heart of Romania \nICSB 2026 participants will also have the opportunity to explore the area surrounding Mangalia. SUMMARY:5th International Congress of Speleology in Artificial Cavities: Hypogea 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Hypogea 2026 International Congress will be held in Tbilisi\, Georgia\, from 22 to 26 September 2026\, under the patronage of the Union Internationale de Spéléologie (UIS). The first four International Congresses of Speleology in Artificial Cavities (HYPOGEA) were successfully held in Rome\, Italy (2015); Cappadocia\, Turkey (2017); Dobrich\, Bulgaria (2019); and Genoa\, Italy (2023). \nThe primary objective of the congress is to exchange knowledge and experience acquired at both the international and national levels in the field of speleological research on artificial caves (works of anthropogenic origin and of archaeological-historical significance). \nGeorgia is particularly rich in outstanding rock-cut monuments. On the territory of the country we encounter a wide variety of sites: from ancient artificial caves\, dating back to the Bronze Age and excavated through the method of heating and cooling the rock\, to cave sanctuaries of the Classical period\, created in the brilliant style of Roman architecture. Especially remarkable\, however\, are the Christian monastic complexes\, comprising dozens of rock-hewn churches\, refectories\, and cells—many adorned with frescoes of extraordinary artistic mastery. \nThe Congress is held under the patronage of the Union Internationale de Spéléologie (UIS) and is organized by the Georgian National Museum and the Ministry of Culture of Georgia in partnership with the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia. \nHYPOGEA is an international scientific platform dedicated to the study\, documentation\, protection and promotion of artificial cavities and underground heritage. \nThe first four International Congresses of Speleology in Artificial Cavities (HYPOGEA) were successfully held in: Rome\, Italy (2015)\, Cappadocia\, Turkey (2017)\, Dobrich\, Bulgaria (2019) and Genoa\, Italy (2023). \nThe first circular can be downloaded at: https://hypogea2026.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/The-Hypogea-2026.pdf \nAll information at the event website: https://hypogea2026.com/
