DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled! \nOn behalf of the European Cave Protection Commission and the Institute of Geography\, Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University Pavol Jozef Šafárik we kindly invite all speleologists\, scientists and authorities active in monitoring and management of cave-\, karst- and groundwater\, to participate at the 7th EuroSpeleo Protection Symposium organized jointly by the University Pavol Jozef Šafárik (UPJŠ) in Košice (SK) and the European Cave Protection Commission (ECPC) of the European Speleological Federation (FSE). The symposium will be held from 9th to 13th September 2024 at the teaching-training facility of the University of Pavol Jozef Šafárik in Danišovce\,district of Spišská Nová Ves\, Slovakia. \nCaves and Karst are important features of the European landscape and have intrinsic natural beauty and value. However\, they are constantly exposed to numerous human impacts\, directly inside the cave environment or indirectly in the associated surrounding. Karst regions suffer from destruction\, air and water pollution associated mainly due to forestry\, agricultural chemicals\, quarries\, landfills\, mining\, urban and rural development and uncontrolled mass tourism. Karst and caves offer a direct access to the groundwater aquifer and the risk of pollution from threads is very high. \nThe 2024 EuroSpeleo Protection Symposium’s theme of “WATER in Caves and Karst” Understanding – Vulnerability – Protection will focus on scientific and technical aspects of water in caves and karst. You are cordially invited to organize a session in the Asian Trans-Disciplinary Karst Conference 2024 and encouraged to invite your colleagues too. \nInternational Expedition \nLocated in eastern part of famous Borneo Island\, Sangkulirang-Mangkalihat is a hidden gem covered by dense and pristine rainforest. Although several explorations have been done and discover many breathtaking features\, most of the part is still remain unknown. It is filled with soaring karst-tower\, crystal-clear spring\, and gigantic caves\, making this region incomparable with others. \nSangkulirang-Mangkalihat karst is divided into several blocks each contains its own chalenges. Further and deeper explorations are still needed to add more values to this area. Uniquenesses of this area can be seen from its geological\, speleological\, and even archaeological phenomenon. This is home of the many rock art caves\, revealing how our ancestors lived and culture. Through all of those features\, it is very urgent to establish the status as Geopark or World Heritage in order to preserve the richness of this area. \nThis expedition is initiated by Karst Research Group of Universitas Gadjah Mada and one of the parts of Road to International Karst and Cave Year 2021 under patronage of Asian Union of Speleology and Federation of Indonesian Sepelological Activities. SUMMARY:31st International Karstological School "Classical karst"
DESCRIPTION:DATA ACQUISITION AND ANALYSIS IN KARST SYSTEMS \nWe have been organizing the International Karst School “Classical Karst” (IKS) since 1993. The school offers a framework in which both\, young and established karstologists from all over the world present new research in the field of karstology\, socialize and get to know Classical karst. Every year\, we choose a leading topic\, the history and state of research of which are presented by invited lecturers\, while the other participants present their research in the form of lectures or posters. The red thread of the school are the afternoon and full-day excursions\, where the leading theme is presented in the field sites of the Classical Karst. The last full-day excursion is entirely dedicated to the general presentation of the most important areas of the Classic Karst. \nThe 31st IKS from 17th – 21st June 2024 will delve into the pivotal theme of data: its acquisition\, processing and interpretation. The rapid evolution of measurement and analytical techniques in the engineering and natural sciences has significantly augmented the toolkit of methods and findings in karst research. State-of-the-art measuring systems\, which provide data with high spatial and temporal resolution\, now permeate all facets of karst research — from speleology\, karst hydrology\, geology and geomorphology to research into the cave climate and subterranean life. When navigating the challenging terrain of the karst underground\, one encounters many obstacles that require innovative solutions for data acquisition. The complexity of karst environments requires ingenuity in processing and interpreting the temporal and spatial data obtained. Cerovacke Caves are the largest tourist cave complex in Croatia and are located on the hillside of southern Velebit\, on the northeastern slope of the Crnopac hill \, in the protected area of ​​the Velebit Nature Park. The nearest town is Gračac\, 4 km away. \nSince its inception in 2007\, the Balkan Speleological Union has been proudly hosting this annual event in different countries across the Balkan Peninsula. Our core mission is to cultivate a dynamic network of connections and collaborations among cavers and speleological organisations from the Balkans and the international community. DESCRIPTION:The 16th European Cave Rescue Meeting is going to take place in Mira de Aire\, Municipality of Porto de Mós\, Maciço Calcário Estremenho\, Portugal from October 12th till 15th 2023.  Pre-Meeting from October 11th till 12th 2023. \n  \nMira de Aire is a village crossed by the Serras de Aire and Candeeiros Natural Park\, where the most spectacular and best preserved natural cave in Portugal is the Mira de Aire Cave\, also known as Moinhos Velhos Cave (Old Windmills Cave). SUMMARY:16th Balkan Cavers Camp
DESCRIPTION:The 16th Balkan Cavers Camp will be organised from 28th June – 2nd July 2023 near Nova Varoš Town\, Western Serbia in the Zlatar Mountain and Special Nature Reserve “Uvac”.  The center of the event and camping place are located nearby hotel “Zlatarski Zlatnik”.  \nThe camp is held to create conditions for connections and cooperation between the cavers and the speleological organizations of Balkan countries and their colleagues from all over the world by sharing information\, experience\, ideas\, establishing joint exploration projects\, expeditions etc. There are excursions to get to know the karst areas and to the most representative caves in the area. Different kind of caves are located close to the camp. Some of the caves are a little further from the camp. \nMore information can be found in the second circular of the camp and the website of the event.

SUMMARY:30th International Karstological School: Karst – Approaches and Conceptual Models
DESCRIPTION:In June 2023\, the Karst Research Institute will host the 30th International Karstological School\, which will be dedicated to various approaches to karst research and the development of conceptual models. Early studies of karst in Europe date back to the 16th century\, where researchers focused mainly on the movement of groundwater\, large springs\, ponors and sinking rivers\, and some caves. In the 19th century\, modern scientific methods began to be applied\, focusing mainly on geomorphology\, but soon expanding to other areas of research. Karst research is highly interdisciplinary and has made great progress in recent years. Modelling studies and conceptual models have given us a rich new understanding of karst\, speleogenesis\, karst aquifers\, and ecosystems. As research methodology and technology have greatly improved over the past decade\, the theme of the 30th anniversary of IKS is a more than justifiable choice. \nWelcome to participate!

DESCRIPTION:The 1st Caucasian Symposium on Subterranean Biology is organized by the cave biologists’ team of Ilia State University\, Tbilisi\, Georgia and will be held at Ilia State University\, Tbilisi\, Georgia on 16th and 17th June\, 2023. \nThe symposium will be organized by the financial support of the National Geographic Society project entitled: “Revealing the subterranean biodiversity of Georgia”. \nParticipants will have oral presentations online (using Zoom software) or onsite at the above-mentioned venue. Presentations will be on different topics. Such as Taxonomy\, systematics\, biodiversity\, ecology\, conservation\, biogeography\, evolution\, etc. Unfortunately\, subterranean organisms are poorly investigated in the Caucasus region. SUMMARY:14th International Symposium on Pseudokarst
DESCRIPTION:Pseudokarst\, block cave in the Hejda massif (photo J. Urban). \n  \nPseudokarst caves in present-day exploration and scientific research \nPseudokarst (non-karst) caves represent a great number of caves discovered\, explored and studied currently and in the past. However\, they are still underestimated in publications\, presentations and media reports dedicated to cave exploration and research. \nEven in the International Year of Caves and Karst “karst” is clearly called in its name\, but we know that many caves are not karstic\, only partly karstic or their genesis is much more complex. Our contribution to the celebration of this Year was the 30th issue of the Pseudokarst Commission Newsletter (http://www.pseudokarst.com/ : Newsletter) that presents numerous examples of such caves occurring all over the world. \nHow will non-karst caves be “perceived” after this Year? This problem and other similar topics will be subjects of discussion during the 14. International Symposium of Pseudokarst in the Sudetes\, Poland. \nThe 14th International Symposium on Pseudokarst will be held on 22-26th May 2023 in the Sudety Mountains (Sudetes)\, southwestern Poland. The main conference venue will be in the village of Karłów (the Centre of Training and Education of the Stołowe Mountains National Park https://www.pngs.com.pl/pl/turystyka/turyst11.html) in the central part of the Stołowe Mountains sandstone tableland. However\, online participation in the scientific sessions (23-24th May) will be also possible. \nField sessions will comprise local geosites (including the mesa of Mt Szczeliniec Wielki and the Skalniak plateau)\, as well as excursions to the Broumov Highland\, Czechia\, and granite caves of the Western Sudetes. \nA guidebook and abstract volume will be provided for participants during the Symposium meeting. The geomorphological and geological materials presented during the scientific sessions will be published in the volume of Studia Quaternaria (http://www.studia.quaternaria.pan.pl/) after normal reviewing procedure. \nMore detailed program will be provided in the 1st Circular\, which will be distributed in October 2022.   \nDuring the Symposium the General Assembly of the UIS Pseudokarst Commission will be held. Two forms of participation will be most probably provided: direct participation at the site and online participation.

SUMMARY:15th EuroSpeleo Forum
DESCRIPTION:The organizers of the 2023 meeting of the German cavers\, the German Speleological Federation as well as the FSE Bureau cordially invites you to join the 15th EuroSpeleoForum (ESF) in Breitscheid/Hessen\, which will take place between 17th and 21st of May 2023. The village of Breitscheid is situated 8 km west the city of Herborn\, about 70 km east of Bonn and about 80 km northwest of Frankfurt/Main. \nThe Breitscheid karst only measures 3 square km. However\, it hosts 16 km of currently known cave passages. The largest caves known are the Herbstlabyrinth-Adventhöhle- System (over 13 km long\, currently the 4th longest cave in Germany) and the Erdbachhöhlensystem (over 2 km long). The area belongs to the Geopark Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus with a lot of karst features like dolines\, sinkholes\, dry valleys and karst resurgences. Parts of the Herbstlabyrinth- Adventhöhle-System are accessible for tourists.\nThe meeting venue will be the school compound and a nearby multi-purpose communal hall in Breitscheid. There will be a campground as well as places for mobile homes. Dormitories (sleeping bag and mattress necessary) will be provided in classrooms. Hotels and B&Bs are available in the surroundings of Breitscheid. \nThere will be many field-trips to the local caves as well as surface excursions and presentations. SUMMARY:4th International Planetary Caves Conference
DESCRIPTION:During the last decade\, caves and subterranean features have been discovered on nearly every planetary surface as the spatial resolution of spacecraft instrumentation has markedly improved. Planetary scientists have identified more than 270 lunar and several hundred martian cave-like features. These features allow us to access and examine the subsurface without costly deep-drilling payloads. Moreover\, caves provide potential habitats for life\, including future human habitation on the Moon and Mars. \nCave-like features on planetary bodies formed from volcanic processes\, tectonic processes\, and/or karst dissolution. Together\, these features represent significant void space in the subsurface. Pit crater chains\, lateral cave entrances\, and skylight entrances represent potential access to the deep subsurface\, enabling us to address key questions about subsurface habitability and biosignature potential. These caves may also host significant water ice deposits for human consumption and potentially generate hydrogen fuel to return humans to Earth. \nThe 4th International Planetary Caves Conference plans to continue capitalizing on advances in the current state-of-the-art cave exploration and exchanging knowledge and ideas between scientists and engineers for future cave missions.
